SAN FRANCISCO, CA.

Sustainability insights platform Higg today introduced a new analytics tool that makes it easy for brands and buyers to understand and act on the environmental performance and impact of manufacturing facilities within the supply chain. The new software solution provides contextualized visibility into the environmental performance of suppliers, including which ones are falling behind on issues like GHG emissions and water sourcing.

“Sustainability data can be very complex. We’re committed to helping customers move beyond gathering and measuring and to putting data at business leaders’ fingertips to inform swifter decision making,” said Higg CEO Jason Kibbey.

Brands and buyers can now identify at a glance, critical environmental sustainability risks and opportunities for improvement in energy sources, chemicals management, waste management, water sources, and wastewater practices.

The recent report from the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change makes it clear that companies must accelerate efforts to reduce their environmental impact. With the Higg analytics tool, companies can synthesize the data they’re gathering to focus on opportunities to curb the impacts of climate change.

“The demand for environmental performance data has never been stronger, but measuring and reporting is not the end game,” Kibbey said. “Businesses need synthesized, contextualized data to identify and manage impact with usable insight into where they’re performing well and where they need to focus efforts, both for individual improvement and industry-level change.”

“It’s helpful to be able to see how much of our water or energy is coming from a particular source,” said Cerian Atwell, Senior Sustainability Manager at Marks & Spencer. “Having a high-level view of the data in these dashboards makes it easier for us to see the big picture. We can also see the risk areas quickly and work with our facilities to make improvements.”

Spotting Trends in Environmental Performance Impact and Improvement

Higg supports more than 45,000 users, including tens of thousands of manufacturing facilities and hundreds of global brands. As consumer goods businesses increasingly prioritize sustainability, actionable displays of data are critical in driving strategic decisions.

The new analytics charts are divided into three sections: total environmental performance, water and GHG impact, and improvement opportunities. The user-friendly format also makes it easy for non-experts to read and saves companies time and resources as they evaluate where to prioritize improvements to meet their unique sustainability goals, supporting technical experts within corporate sustainability departments to translate risks and opportunities for executive management.

“At Ralph Lauren, we have integrated the Higg Facility Environmental Module into our supplier performance evaluation that informs our engagement strategy and business decisions,” said Devon Leahy, VP of Sustainability at Ralph Lauren. “We are committed to reduce absolute scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by 30% by 2030 from a FY20 base year. We also target at least a 20% reduction in total water use across our operations and value chain by 2025, compared to a FY20 baseline. Analyzing data from the Higg Facility Environmental Module helps us track these KPIs and identify where we need to accelerate our efforts.”

Spotlighting Areas for Improvement

In addition to internal reporting, some customers are using Higg data and the new analytics to evaluate performance on broader corporate sustainability initiatives, such as Certified B Corporation assessments. Higg analytics feature year over year data, helping brands easily see and report on their ongoing progress and sustainability improvements.
