Supporting industry change with the latest data
Toray, a leading fiber, fabric, and textile manufacturer based in Japan, has been a critical partner in broadening the Higg MSI database.
Before the Higg Materials Sustainability Index (Higg MSI), in order to understand product material impacts, design and development teams had to cobble together life cycle assessment data with their own sustainability knowledge. The tool was designed to help the industry unify how we view material impacts, bringing together science-based, peer-reviewed life cycle assessment data, and offering insights into the best materials and manufacturing process options businesses can use to develop more sustainable products.
However, the Higg MSI is only as strong as the data contributions it receives from the textile community, and businesses like Toray are encouraged to submit their own materials production data, helping the industry uniformly understand material impacts.
Before Worldly, there was no tool that had common life-cycle assessment criteria, methodology, and procedure specially created for the textile industry, and developed through global, industry-wide consensus.

General Manager of Fibers & Textiles, Business Planning at Toray
Toray contributed their process data of partially plant-based polyester filament fabric, one of their expanding lineup of low-environmental load materials to the Higg MSI. This contribution further expands the Higg MSI’s materials knowledge, bringing our customers a rich and robust tool that analyzes the impact of their materials selections.
“From the viewpoint of a manufacturer, our products are the basis on which we do business with customers. Each product features so much variety, for example, shape of filament, fineness, color, function, etc.,” says Hidenori Terai, General Manager of Fibers & Textiles, Business Planning.
Terai explained how they plan to help contribute to our tools’ knowledge base: “The main contribution we can provide for tool development is process data into the Higg MSI. We submitted our process data of partially plant-based polyester filament fabric, one of our expanding lineup of low-environmental load materials. It was our great pleasure that this material was registered in the Higg MSI.”
Growing Worldly data
Worldly will continue partnering with Toray for even richer data collaboration in the near future. We are excited to expand the Higg MSI with additional textile data from Toray and future contributors, bringing sustainability insights to the designers and developers who rely on the Higg MSI.
“We hope we can contribute to enhancing the Higg MSI to continue improving data and developing material sharing and private processes functions,” Terai added.
Thanks to Toray and numerous other partners, this global tool showcases the strengths and weaknesses of virtually all materials in the world, helping the consumer goods industry make more impactful, sustainable decisions.
